In the latest episode of our podcast, "Lead & SUCCEED: Startup Edition", we tackled a question that's often pondered but seldom answered definitively - What is the difference between a leader and a manager?
This question is integral to our understanding of leadership and management, especially in the fast-paced, challenging environment of a startup.
A manager, as we discussed, receives their authority through the hierarchical structure of an organization. They oversee their reports, ensuring tasks are completed and goals are achieved. Their role is largely tied to the organization's processes and systems.
On the other hand, a leader's authority comes from a different source. A leader earns their authority from those willing to follow them. It's not about hierarchy, but about inspiration, guidance, and support.
Leadership can, and should, be a part of management. A manager who leads is one who helps their team members develop, who inspires and guides them, not merely instructs them. Such a manager often finds their team performing better than one simply tasked with duties and deadlines. It's about fostering growth and encouraging progression, not just monitoring performance.
